Now, a little story about how I got to work this morning, entitled "How I got to work this morning by threeze".
This
morning, as I was driving to work, I wanted to change lanes. I put my
indicator on, and then using a technique known as a "head check" made
sure there was room for my car in the adjacent lane. There was
more than enough room for 4 cars, but as this was Canberra, as soon as
I put my indicator on it signalled to the car 4+ cars back that I
wanted to move in front of them, so they started to accelerate, thus
closing my gap.
But,
you see, I have a tuned sports car. It is a very fast car. So I
stupidly put my foot down. And then my perspective on the world
changed. Instead of seeing the road in front of me, as is natural when
looking ahead in a motor vehicle, I was suddenly greeted with the view
that would normally be associated with looking out the side
window. The back end had stepped out. And aggressively.
Because
I have spent most of my driving years as a hoon (even though I have no
real talent at it) I was able to catch the car and instead of spinning
out in the middle of the road, I merely drifted into the lane of my
choice. The car ( now 2+ cars back) was furiously using its
methods of braking and there was, thankfully, no collision. But,
Christ, the look on her face!!!
So, I think there are a few lessons to be learned from this story.
- If someone indicates that they want to move lanes, and there is more than enough room, just damn well let them.
- I need new tyres.
- Remember that in the wet, rear wheel drive turbo charged engines can be a handful and a half. More so if you have tinkered with them. Even more so if you have had a professional tinker with them and make them better than new, which is the opposite of what happens when I personally tinker with cars.
